The Challenge
Farmers today face pressures that older methods just can't keep up with on their own.
Nearly every harvest still hangs on the rain, and the rain no longer keeps a schedule. One mistimed planting can cost a farmer the whole season.
A single pest can clear a field before anyone even names it. Fall armyworm spread from the Americas to farms across Africa and Asia in just a few years, and it attacks more than 80 crops, maize most of all.
When something goes wrong in the field, there's usually no expert to ask. Across Sub-Saharan Africa most farmers say extension help rarely reaches them, so problems get caught too late, if at all.
Without good information, every choice about when to irrigate, spray, or feed the crop is a guess, and a wrong one burns through water and cash a farmer can't spare.
Advice built for the average farm fits no one. It can't see your soil, your rainfall, or your crops, and without local data even the best models stop being accurate.
The bigger picture is sobering: staple yields like maize, millet, and sorghum could fall 20–30% in parts of Africa by 2050, while more mouths go hungry each year.
The Solution
HingaSmart doesn't just collect farming data. It uses that data to create practical advice farmers can act on, and gives them one place to find research, expert guidance, and everyday know-how: the community forum. Every advisory is tuned to each farm's location, crops, soil, and weather.

Where We Come From
HingaSmart isn't starting from zero. Its first version shipped under an earlier name, DACA, a platform of our own that the Alliance of Bioversity International & CIAT and PABRA brought in as the digital advisory tool for a ten-country agro-climate programme they spearheaded. Deployed in that programme, our technology supported:

Rebuilt from the ground up: hyperlocal forecasting, a full-season crop advisory, verified experts, and USSD on the way.
Figures reported from the 2023 agro-climate advisory training programme led by the Alliance of Bioversity International & CIAT and PABRA, in which DACA (HingaSmart's earlier release) was deployed as the digital advisory tool. DACA was, and HingaSmart remains, an independent product of K7 Group Ltd.

Core advisories, weather forecasts, and climate alerts are available to every farmer at no cost. Cooperatives and organisations can license additional capability directly from us.
Today HingaSmart runs as an app with a connection. We're building USSD access so that anyone with any mobile phone (no smartphone, no data, no internet) can get the same weather advisories, crop guidance, and alerts by dialling a short code. The goal is simple: no farmer is left out because of the phone in their pocket or the network where they farm.
HingaSmart is available in English today. Local-language support, including Kinyarwanda, Swahili, and French, is in development, so farmers will soon get every advisory in the language they know best.
HingaSmart covers major staple crops including maize, beans, Irish potato, and rice, with a step-by-step crop advisory for each. More crops and livestock guidance are being added.
Our guidance is built on climate science and agronomy research from established scientific institutions, combined with your own farm's data, and it improves as models and records are updated. It's there to support your judgment, not replace it.
